Triumph TR2 - Front Grill

Gentlemen, I am purchasing a 55 TR2 #TS6786L. I notice that the fron grill is not recessed back like most and mor towards the front. Is this correct?

I have sent you a photo to your e-mail address show the correct position for the grille. This photo is from an original TR2 which has never been modified. It is still owned by the original owner who bought it brand new in 1954.

Just to back up Don's answer, not that he needs any support, he's a TR guru:

The 2 had the one piece stamped grill (like square holes in it, if I remember right) that was recessed back in the opening. The early 3 had a multiple piece grill made of a few channels that fit together and was mounted closer to the front of the opening. This sounds like what yours has. I don't think the 2 had a trim around the opening either, and the 3 did.

IF that is the only thing non-stock about the car, I wouldn't worry too much. But it may be a later car with numbers from an earlier one. Learn as much as you can before paying a premium for a 2 over a 3.

You may want to contact Al in the other thread here. It sounds like he knows more details of differences between 2's (and 3's) than I do.

Without researching, I don't know if your 2 is one of the last ones or not. Or if it's possible they just started using TR3 grills at some time. If I had a 2, I guess I would like to have what everyone considers a proper 2 grill, though.

The tr2 had a cast grille set at the rear of the opening in the front apron. The VERY late tr2's had the chrome trim surrounding abour 3/4 of the front opening. Al Christopher

I've just listed a factory workshop and an instruction (glovebox) manual for TR-2 (and TR-3) These are from my 1960s reference library.
